Atrocious Hibs Humbled |

Despite going one up in this CIS Cup 3rd round tie, Hibs, the holders, were convincingly beaten by an impressive Motherwell side. The Lanarkshire lot had started the brighter of both sides and had a couple of decent early opportunities before the home side took the lead. Clayton Donaldson gave Hibs a lead against the early run of play with a beautiful individual strike. Having collected a pass from Kerr on the left hand touchline in 11 minutes the big striker cut infield taking out 4 'Well defenders before slotting under the keeper. The home fans were overjoyed but their celebrations were cut short only 6 minutes later. Motherwell forced a corner on Hibs right hand side and the cross was met by the head of David Clarkson who gleefully headed home. If question marks were asked about the defending on that occasion then the second goal 3 minutes later raised many more. A Hibs corner kick had been defended and a quick break caught Hibees out. A neat ball played to McGarry on the right wing bizarrley found him up against Dean Shiels in a left back position, but he beat him easily and crossed for Keith Lasley to score. To be fair to the midfielder it was a well taken strike. The away side were entirely on top and it came as no surprise to anyone when they added a third after only 24 minutes. A third goal in only 7 minutes and it was the pick of the bunch. The ball came to Ross McCormack 25 yards out to the left of the Hibs goal and he floated in a beautiful chip over 6'7' keeper Makalamby. It was an equisite finish from a player who impressed all evening. The interval came and went with Hibs making two subs. Zemmama and Morais came on for the ineffectual Stevenson and Shiels. Hibs looked one dimensional in the second half although Morais had two long range efforts over the bar whilst Donaldson had a chance from a header and Beuzelin missed a great opportunity from the edge of the area. It was the visitors who wrapped the evenings proceedings up after 84 minutes after another fine passage of play. A great ball from the left hand side played in Porter who finished low into Makalamby's bottom right hand corner. 4-1 down at home saw most Hibees head for the exits but Antoine Curier scored a late consolation for the die hards who stayed behind. |
