David Weir could extend stay at Ibrox

Man-of-the-match David Weir has revealed that he could extend his stay with Rangers for another season.
Weir was signed by Walter Smith from Everton in January but was expected to return in the summer to England, where his family still live. David Weir

But, following the 1-0 win over St Mirren, Weir said: "I have spoken to my family and hopefully I can stay here.

"There's a few things to discuss, but there's not many better places to play football. I love playing for Rangers."

Manager Smith was hopeful of securing the 36-year-old's services.

"We'll speak to him over the next week or so, but there is nothing on that at the present moment," he said.

"He's happy here and we're happy with him, so hopefully we can do something that will keep him here for another year."

Smith admitted it was not a stylish Rangers display but was just delighted to gain three points.

"It was a fraught afternoon, the first time this season when we had a bobbly pitch and the teams didn't have time to get the ball down," he said.

"We missed a few chances after taking the lead.

"But, all credit to St Mirren, we had to work very hard to hold them out.

"It wasn't pretty for either team and I was just glad to win it."

Meanwhile, St Mirrren manager Gus MacPherson suggested that Rangers were a better side than the one that drew 1-1 with St Mirren when managed by Paul Le Guen.

"You can see the improvement in determination in that Rangers squad since Coisty and Walter came in," he said.
