David Moyes used tonight's game as a springboard to further success in the league and UEFA cup as Everton comfortably overcame Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
James McFadden further staked his claim for more recognition with two well taken goals and formed a decent understanding with Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who grabbed the third goal with a cool finish.
Alan Stubbs and Nuno Valente contributed well to what was a good defensive performance, but David Moyes was quick to point out the impact Phil Neville had on proceedings, after being introduced as a second half substitute.
The England utility man worked well with Steven Pienaar down the right channel and layed off James McFadden's second with a good cross.
"It was a bonus keeping our first clean sheet of the season," Moyes told evertonfc.com.
"Alan Stubbs and Nuno Valente played their parts and I have got to praise them for getting that.
"We did not scale the heights we wanted to in the first half and probably Phil Neville was the difference. I thought his contribution was fantastic. It got us forward and we passed the ball better.
