I could hear the rain running down the windows and, at one point, I had to do my best not to eves-drop on a conversation going on outside between two youngsters who were determined to get down to business. Instead, I took the opportunity to run through my mind all those magical moments Jose Mourinho gave us. I`d hoped they`d help me drift to sleep; instead they only made matters worse.
I sort of became involved in a game whereby my own mind couldn`t decide exactly which Mourinho memory was my favourite. However, as dawn broke and the birds broke out into an incessant racket (dawn chorus my arse), I finally decided on my favourite moment.
It came during his second season and we were already the Premiership champions. It had been a long wait to be able to say that, in fact it was often mused that if it happened once before I died I`d die a happy man.
However, Mourinho still had more to offer, he still wanted more and throughout the season he urged us, the supporters, to create more noise. His ranting seemed to work.
Manchester United arrived at Old Trafford and Chelsea knew a victory would give us a second successive title. Chelsea duly won, amidst wonderful scenes, 3-0.
We all waited in anticipation for the trophy presentation to begin; when it finally did it was like living in utopia. Then it happened. A gesture so magnificent it left many stunned.
Mourinho received his medal and promptly threw it into the crowd, the officials were stunned and proceeded to give him another which was then subsequently also launched into the crowd.
I believe that moment was the moment Mourinho knew he`d been sucked into a life of loving Chelsea and that the medals were reward for the response to his better atmosphere challenge.
That`s just one memory, now we here at Vital Chelsea are giving you the chance to pay homage to the greatest manager in our history.
You have a choice, simply recall your favourite memory in the comments box below or if you`re bold enough e-mail me, (the editor) via the link at the top of the page and I`ll put your memory up in lights. It doesn`t have to be essay length, half a page in length will be sufficient.
