The Carling Cup used to be seen as a vastly inferior competition with little use whatsoever for the big clubs. While this reputation has stuck the top four in the past few years have used the Carling Cup to test out their youth and reserve players- Arsenal famously reaching the Carling Cup final last season with a bunch of 'kids'. The Carling Cup is shown on television, however matches are often limited- should you want a wider choice, you can catch the Carling Cup live online on OleOleFootball.com by using their live streaming football.
Due to some of the big teams resting their 'star names', shocks in the competition are definitely a possibility- this has been proved in the past few years. Manchester United were the worst hit team, not just falling foul to a Freddy Eastwood goal last season as lowly Southend United beat them 1-0; the Red Devils were also blitzed this year at Old Trafford by two Michael Mifsud goals as Championship side Coventry City pulled off a massive shock. These past shocks have not just been limited to Manchester United- Tottenham Hotspur lost to League Two side Grimsby Town in the 2005/06 season while Liverpool were defeated by Crystal Palace that same year.
This season, the competition for the Carling Cup looks good, despite the early exit of Manchester United. Arsenal's collection of youngsters and reserves beat a near full strength Newcastle United side at the Emirates Stadium and now take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Chelsea had a slightly easier task, playing against Hull City who they calmly dispatched 4-0; they take on Leicester City at Stamford Bridge in the next round. Liverpool pulled off a thrilling 4-2 victory over Reading mainly due to a sensational hat trick from new summer signing Fernando Torres; they were rewarded for that by being drawn against Cardiff City in the next round. The tie against Cardiff City will see Robbie Fowler return to his old club- this should be an interesting match for Liverpool supporters for both football and sentimental reasons.
It is just Round 4 of the Carling Cup and events have mainly gone to standard with most of the Premier League sides going through; there is not a single match that does not have a Premiership team playing in it. While most of the games to be played should be relatively simple to predict the final score- Tottenham take on Blackpool at White Hart Lane while Everton make the trip to Luton , there are two all-Premiership games which should prove entertaining to watch. The first one is between Portsmouth and Blackburn at Fratton Park; both those sides should be competing for European football this year while the second game sees Manchester City play Bolton at the Reebok Stadium. In the past, this would have been a relatively easy game to predict as Bolton are king at the Reebok, however recent times have seen a completely revamped Manchester City side and Bolton in turmoil so anything is possible.
