The arrival of David Beckham to the MLS for a record deal in football terms made many think that interest in the sport as well as the level of play would increase; while the former has been true, the latter is questionable. Beckham has not done too well and has even hinted at a possible return to England –whether on loan or permanently– after the end of the season in December. Beckham and LA Galaxy have done poorly, sitting second last in their group with just thirty three points after twenty eight games played. The likes of DC United and Chivas USA have done well though, and both sit top of their conference tables and will face off at the end of the season if they manage to keep their fine form going.

Although this is meant to give you a summary of the MLS, you cannot do so nowadays without mentioning Beckham’s name at least five or six times. Beckham sadly has not done as well as he was expected to in the league, and although he put in some good performances when available he was also injured quite a lot of the time, be it because of the physical style of football or because he had to keep traveling across the Atlantic to play for England. As for LA Galaxy, they and other teams at the bottom of the tables (Toronto FC and Real Salt Lake) are lucky there is no relegation in American soccer, as some of their performances this season have definitely warranted it.

The MLS Eastern Conference Table has not really seen that much competition, with DC United leading by seven points ahead of New England, who put up a spirited fight at times but are currently some way off. They should not have many worries though; New York Red Bull are a further seven points behind them, giving them plenty of leeway should they slip up. As for the MLS Western Conference Table, which is where LA Galaxy are located, it has been a lot more competitive. Just a single point separates first placed Chivas USA from second places Houston, and no doubt we will see more twists and turns as the season continues to progress. The duo will play each other on the 20th of October, and that could well be a title turning game if Houston win.

In the past, it was very hard to watch American soccer even if you lived in the country itself; the sport is not as popular as baseball, basketball and American football over there while soccer fans from across the Atlantic and from South America were more interested in their higher quality, more competitive leagues. Now however, whilst the standard of the league may not have improved, you can watch more of the action due to the advanced television coverage because of Beckham going there; and should you not have the television channels, you can watch the MLS live at OleOleFootball.com.
