The Super Eagles lived up to their tag of perennial underachievers when they faced Egypt in their group opener. Nigeria were expected to get the better of an under strength Egypt side, but Shaibu Amodu’s side fizzled out after taking the lead. Hoffenheim forward Chinedu Obasi put them ahead with a thunderous strike from outside the area.

However a goalkeeping error by Vincent Enyeama allowed Egypt’s Emad Moteab to equalise. Pharaohs skipper Ahmed Hassan’s shot then took a massive deflection of Taye Taiwo to put Egypt 2-1 up. The game was put beyond the reach of the Super Eagles when Mohamed Nagy Gedo scored three minutes from time.

Obafemi Martins did not feature for Nigeria and is expected to get a look in. Amodu might also be tempted to go in with Obinna or Kanu from the start in place of the ineffective Yakubu. Seyi Olofinjana will provide another option in midfield. He may get a start in place of Dickson Etuhu. Obinna Nwaneri is on one yellow card.

Goalkeeping errors proved costly for Benin as they let a 2-0 lead slip against Mozambique. Yoann Djidonou flapped at a corner and missed the ball allowing Almiro Lobo to score. In the second half, he ventured into the outfield and put the ball into touch. A quick throw-in caught him off his line and resulted in a goal for Fumo.

Benin had scored previously through an Omotoyossi penalty. The Metz forward looked lively and will pose a serious threat to Nigeria. Stephane Sessegnon also put in a commendable performance. Khaled Adenon and Jocelyn Ahoueya are on yellow cards.
