Blackburn were beaten 3-1 by Villa when the two sides met in the FA Cup. Young Nathan Delfouneso opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading in Ashley Young’s cross. Rovers were then given a route back into the game when Nigel Reo Coker conceded a penalty after fouling Steven Reid. However Villa keeper Brad Guzan, hero of the Midland club’s Carling Cup triumph over Sunderland, managed to prevent David Dunn from equalising for Blackburn.
Sam Allardyce’s men were made to rue that penalty miss as six minutes later, Young delivered another perfect cross for Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar to head in. Blackburn were reduced to ten men when El Hadji Diouf was sent off for a horrible challenge on compatriot Habib Beye.
Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic pulled one back for Blackburn in the 54th minute after Guzan failed to claim Morten Gamst Pedersen’s corner perfectly. However Rovers’ hopes of forcing a replay were dashed when Gael Givet brought John Carew down in the last minute of normal time.
The Norwegian striker sent Blackburn Rovers Jason Brown the wrong way to complete a 3-1 win for Martin O’Neill’s men. To compound Blackburn’s woes, Diouf was given a three match ban for his challenge, which means he is suspended for this League Cup tie.
