City were humbled 2-0 at home by Everton on Saturday. The Toffees took the lead in the 37th minute when Steven Pienaar curled home a free kick from just outside the area. Just before half time, City were dealt a blow when referee Andre Marriner penalised Micah Richards for tugging at Louis Saha’s shirt. The Frenchman coolly stepped up to convert the resultant spot kick.

City’s stars had an off day, none more so than Brazilian forward Robinho, who started the game on the bench and was substituted after fifty minutes of action for Shaun Wright Phillips.

Man United needed three second half goals to see off the challenge of Burnley at Old Trafford. Striker Dimitar Berbatov broke the deadlock on 64 minutes. Nani passed the ball to Rooney, who sent it into Berbatov’s path. The Bulgarian staved off Mike Duff’s efforts to stop him before shooting past Burnley keeper Brian Jensen.

Rooney doubled United’s lead five minutes later. Jensen managed to block Berbatov’s first time effort, but he could not stop Rooney from collecting the ball and sidefooting it in. Recent signing Mame Biram Diouf added a third late in the game to keep United in the hunt for the title.

Man City beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium to move into the fourth round of the FA Cup. City boss Roberto Mancini made Zimbabwean striker Benjani to play alone upfront and also handed young Dedryck Boyata his first start for the club. The decision very nearly backfired as Boro made City’s defence work more than they would have expected to in the opening minutes.

However Boro lost their way after Adam Johnson, easily their best player on the pitch, was replaced by Marvin Emnes in the 32nd minute of the game. City took the lead in the 45th minute when an excellent pass from Petrov picked out Benjani, and the Zimbabwean coolly slotted the ball past Boro keeper Coyne.

While City were able to see off Championship club Boro, United were upset by old rivals Leeeds United on Sunday afternoon. The League One leaders thereby handed Sir Alex Ferguson his first defeat against a lower division side in the FA Cup.

In demand striker Jermaine Beckford scored the winner for Leeds in the 19th minute. Johnny Howson lofted the ball into Beckford’s path, and although the striker’s first touch wasn’t as good as it could have been, he made up for it by reaching the ball ahead of United defender Wes Brown and then slid it past Tomas Kuszczak in the United keeper.
