In the first leg of this Champions League clash Chelsea secured a vital 3-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Liverpool took an early lead through Spanish striker Fernando Torres after just six minutes. It looked like it could be Liverpool’s night, until Chelsea equalised through defender Branislav Ivanovic in the 39th minute. It got even better for Serbian as he doubled his Chelsea goal tally in the 62nd minute. Didier Drogba secured the win with Chelsea’s third goal in the 67th minute.

The result was a massive one for Chelsea with three away goals they hold the initiative for the second leg at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool will have to go to Stamford Bridge and score three goals to progress into the semi finals. Liverpool are the kings of the European comeback and never give up till the final whistle.

Unfortunately for Liverpool though, they haven’t scored three or more goals at Stamford Bridge in 20 years. It’s been 12 years since the Reds have scored three or more goals against Chelsea winning 4-2 at Anfield in 1997.

Liverpool will have Argentinean Javier Mascherano available again after the midfielder missed the first leg through suspension and Rafa Benitez could also find a place in defence for Daniel Agger and Andrea Dossena, the Italian came on in the first leg at Anfield.

Chelsea could start with Ricardo Carvalho at centre half, after the Portuguese defender made a substitute appearance in the first leg. Right back Jose Bosingwa is also likely to be in the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury. The Portuguese international may have to be happy with a role on the bench, but Branislav Ivanovic is likely to start at right back after scoring a brace in the first leg.
