One of the lesser known matchups during the opening round of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup will be the game between Panama and Guadeloupe. While it may not be a headline game, it will offer some great competition and some exciting football action. Panama will be engaged in the tournament for the third straight year. Their best year came in 2005 when the team made it all the way to the finals of the Gold Cup tournament. The “Red Tide” will be coming into the tournament as the UNCAF champion and will be looking to overtake Costa Rica, who has been a long time rival. In their first game Panama will face a little known team from Guadeloupe. Panama is expected to walk away with an easy victory but Guadeloupe is definitely going to bring their best effort. Guadeloupe will be making just their second trip to the Gold Cup tournament and will be looking to make a splash on the international level. This made them the first team from the Caribbean to make it that far since the year 2000 when Trinidad and Tobago made it just as far. This year the team made it all the way to the semifinals of the Digicel Caribbean Championship and that is how they qualified for the Gold Cup this year. Because Guadeloupe is a department of France, their top players often leave to represent the French team when it comes to international competition.
