Both teams suffered defeats in their second games of the tournament – Iraq losing 1-0 to Spain, while New Zealand lost 2-0 to the hosts South Africa. All this meant that while Iraq still have an outside chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, depending on South Africa’s result against Spain, New Zealand are definitely out of the competition and will be playing for pride.
Bearing in mind how New Zealand fared against Spain in the first game, Iraq took to the pitch against the Spaniards with a very much defence orientated attitude and this was eventually reflected in the final score, which “only” finished 1-0 to Spain through a 30th minute David Villa goal. The Iraqi team did almost snatch a shock lead early in the game, but apart from this they never really threatened Casillas in the Spain goal.
For their part, New Zealand went down 2-0 to a South African side that had the advantage of playing in front of a large, partisan crowd, which certainly made life easier for the players. Two lucky goals it has to be said from Bernard Parker was enough to give the South Africans victory, but such was their dominance in large swathes of this game, that they could yet still come to rue the missed chances.
