New Zealand are appearing for the 3rd time in this tournament and come into it as the 2008 OFC Nations Cup winner. Spain, on the other hand, are appearing for the very first time, and this virtue of the Euro 2008 victory.
This will be the first game of the tournament that features tow “foreign” teams, as hosts South Africa take on Iraq earlier in the day. All eyes, of course, will be on Spain and their galaxy of international stars including the like of Torres, Iniesta, Puyol, Villa, Casillas, Xavi, Fabregas and Alonso. The Spanish are famous for their exciting, flair football and they are, quite rightly, among the favourites to lift the cup.
New Zealand for their part, might not have the internationally known names to their squad like Spain do, but they are seasoned pros when it comes to this competition, this being their third venture. They have, though, been eliminated in the first round in their previous attempts and will have their work cut out this year if they have aspirations to qualify – South Africa and Spain being favourites to qualify from the group.
Although this is the end of a gruelling season for the Spanish players, they will be determined to give a good showing before they depart on their much needed holidays for rest and recuperation in preparation for next season.
