The United States team find themselves in the final thanks to one of the biggest footballing shocks of the last few years. They defeated favourites for the tournament Spain by 2-0 and at the same time brought to an end Spain’s impressive 35 run of undefeated games.

Nobody saw this score line coming, especially considering how both teams had fared in the tournament up until this point; Spain playing exhilarating football, seemingly sweeping everything away that stood in their path, and the United States struggling to make any impact at all, only getting through to the semis virtue of circumstance and a large dollop of good luck.

For the record, goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey in each half of the game secured a deserved victory for the Americans, although goalkeeper Tim Howard managed to keep the free scoring Spaniards at bay almost single-handedly. The United States know that they have a real tough assignment in the final when they face Brazil, but they feel that if they can beat Spain, they can beat anybody.

For their part, the Brazilians broke the heart of the host nation South Africa in the other semi when Daniel Alves netted an 88th minute thunderbolt of a free kick. An exciting game swung first one way, then the next, but at the end of the day it wasn’t to be for the South Africans and their dream was ended – until next summer.

The United States faced Italy in their first game in this year’s Confederations Cup and were eventually defeated by 3-1. Despite having Ricardo Clark sent off in the 33rd minute, the Americans managed to take the lead on 40 minutes when Donavan stroked home a penalty after striker Jozy Altidore was hauled down in the box. The Italians equalised in the 58th minute and went on to score another two in the 71st and 94th minutes to seal the victory.

The United States team showed enough character and endeavour to suggest that they do have the ability to cause Brazil some problems in their upcoming match, but know the Brazilians will still be overwhelming favourites to secure the win and take the three points.

For their part, Brazil had a stuttering start to their campaign when they faced Egypt. Despite taking an early fifth minute lead through Kaka, Brazils lead didn’t last long until Egypt managed to sneak an equaliser. This lasted until the twelfth minute when the Brazilians again found the net, this time through a Luis Fabiano header. When Juan netted another header for Brazil just before half time, most people thought that it was all over. But the Egyptians had other ideas and scored two goals in a minute to stun the Brazilians and level the scores.

As the game looked destined to finish 3-3, a handball on the line in the last minute handed the Brazilians a penalty which was duly dispatched by Kaka, handing Brazil the victory.
