England starts their bid for Euro under 21’s glory when they face Finland in the opening game of Euro 2009. The young Three Lions are one of the favourites for the tournament and will want to start with a win against the Finn’s. Group B is the group of death, with Germany and Spain also in group. Stuart Pearce’s England side head into this Championship on the back of a 7-0 victory over Azerbaijan. Unfortunately for England though, their under 21’s haven’t won the tournament since 1984. England have a good head to head record against the Scandinavians, the Three Lions winning four out of the last six games and losing only once.

England go into the tournament without defender Steven Taylor and Striker Danny Welbeck, but still have a strong squad full of Premier League regulars. The aforementioned Tim Sparv is Finland’s midfield star and will be key to his side’s success. He can contribute a goal, the midfielder scoring goals against Denmark, Slovenia and Lithuania. Not only can he go forward he is also strong tackler and provides a good solid base for the side in midfield.
