Everton have enjoyed two wins out of two so far in this season’s European adventures, and they will be aiming to make it a perfect nine points come Thursday evening when they clash with Benfica. The y beat BATE away last time out, and in the first game of the group they despatched AEK Athens by 4-0.

In the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, the Toffees were lucky to snatch a point from Mick McCarthy’s Wolves side at Goodison Park. A last minute equaliser gave David Moyes team a share of the points, but their league form this season remains hugely disappointing. Although they now occupy eleventh position in the league table, they only have eleven points to their name. The slight improvement of the last few weeks has been dampened somewhat by Saturday’s draw.

For their part, Benfica go into the game against the English side full of optimism. They did lose their last game 1-0 away to AEK Athens, but beat BATE 2-0 in their first game of the tournament in Portugal. There were no domestic weekend league games in Portugal, but the team currently occupy second position in the league table with nineteen points from seven games, two behind leaders Braga.

The teams have never met in Europe before; in fact this is Everton's first game against Portuguese opponents. Benfica themselves have come up against English opposition ten times at home so far in competitive games, winning four, drawing two and losing four for their efforts.
