After holding league leaders Chelsea to a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Everton will turn their attention to the Europa League when they face BATE Borisov in Group I on Thursday night.
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s 6th minute strike was enough for Everton to see off AEK Athens in Greece on Match Day 5. The Toffees qualified for the next stage of the competition with that win, making this a dead rubber for David Moyes’ men. However Everton could still finish as group winners if Benfica lose their last group game.
Everton took the lead against Chelsea through Petr Cech’s own goal. Leighton Baines’ free kick was headed by Terry on to the post, and the ball hit Cech’s back before going into the net. Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka put Chelsea in front, but Everton made it 2-2 just before half time through Yakubu. Chelsea failed to clear Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s long throw in and the Nigerian striker equalised from close range for Everton. Drogba restored Chelsea’s ahead but Everton again found a way back into the game. Heitinga’s free kick was headed by Drogba onto Saha and the ball hit the Frenchman’s head before going in.
BATE were beaten 2-1 by Benfica at home on Match Day 5. The hosts had two good chances in the first half with Sergei Sosnovski going close with his header and Sergei Krivets’ free kick hitting the crossbar. However it was Benfica who took the lead in the early minutes of the second half through Javier Saviola. The Argentine striker also assisted Fabio Coentrao for Benfica’s second in the 63rd minute.
BATE’s only goal of the game came in the 69th minute. Kravets whipped in a corner and Sosnovski got his head to it. The ball hit Miguel Vitor and went into the Benfica net, thereby making the defender the scorer of an own goal he could do little to prevent.
