Fulham have not enjoyed the best of starts to the current Premier league campaign. Although they have been playing some nice football, results have not been going their way. On Saturday they entertained their London rivals Arsenal at home, and despite outplaying their more illustrious visitors for large periods of the game and watching the Arsenal reserve keeper making save after save, they still contrived to lose the game 1-0. As a consequence, Roy Hodgson’s team now find themselves in a lowly seventeenth position in the league table with just six points to their name from six games.

Swiss side Basle are eleven games into their current league campaign and are in fourth position with eighteen points, ten behind current leaders Young Boys. At the weekend they played Aarau away from home and won the game 2-0.

In matchday one of the Europa league both teams enjoyed impressive results. Fulham travelled to Sofia for a difficult tie against CSKA and came away with a very creditable 1-1 draw, while Basel performed even better; they beat Italian giants Roma by 2-0 at home, getting their campaign off to the best possible start.

While this is the first time Fulham will have been facing Swiss opposition in European competition, Basle have faced English sides in England on six previous occasions, managing only two draws (1-1 both games) and four defeats, all by a three goal or more margin. Fulham are undefeated in all of their European home games to date (nine).
