Everton progressed into the fifth round after beating fellow Merseyside rivals Liverpool 1-0 in fourth round replay. The tie seemed to be inevitably heading towards penalties before teenager Dan Gosling stepped up to fire Everton into the lead just two minutes from time, which ITV sensationally missed with their live coverage after cutting to an advert break. Everton come into the game on the back of a confident 3-0 win where new striker Jo netted a brace on his debut for the club.

Aston Villa fought hard to knock out Championship side Doncaster Rovers with a 3-1 win at Villa Park to ensure their passage to the fifth round. Steve Sidwell had opened the scoring for Villa before Norwegian John Carew doubled the side’s lead. Jason Price gave Rovers a glimmer of hope by pulling one back just before half time, but youngster Nathan Delfouneso sealed the win in the 68th minute at Villa Park.

Villa have not lost in 15 domestic games and currently fly high in 3rd place in the Premier League and could be one of the first teams to break the top three for a number of years. Manager Martin O’Neill has received plaudits from all over England not only from his teams quality style of play, but because 6 of his squad have been called up to the full England international squad, whilst 2nd placed Liverpool have no England players in the squad.
