Rangers surrendered their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League to Celtic on Wednesday evening when they lost 1-0 to lowly Inverness. The Gers dominated the game in terms of possession, but hardly tested opposition keeper Ryan Esson and were made to pay when Ian Black slotted home a late penalty for Caley Thistle. Defender David Weir was sent off for a foul on David Proctor.
Despite receiving the marching orders from the referee, Weir is still eligible to play against Hamilton Accies. He will sit out Rangers’ next SPL game against Hearts. Rangers had beaten St.Johnstone 2-0 in the fourth round, and thrashed Forfar Athletic 4-0 in the round of sixteen. Kenny Miller scored a brace for Rangers against Forfar.
Hamilton Academical lost their midweek Scottish Premier League game 1-0 to Hibs. Steven Fletcher scored the winner for Hibs at New Douglas Park. Hamilton also hosted Rangers recently in the league, and lost 1-0 as opposition skipper Barry Ferguson scored his first goal of the season.
The Accies rode on a Chris Swailes brace to beat Dundee United 2-1 in the fifth round. Swailes was also the scorer when they beat Ross County 1-0 in the fourth round.
Can Rangers overcome the disappointment of losing to Inverness and beat Hamilton Academical to move into the last four of the Homecoming Scottish Cup? Or will Billy Reid’s side spring a surprise?
