Both teams are at the top of their respective group standings, Italy from the European Zone, and ranked first in group 8 with 14 points. Italy has played a total of 6 games in the qualifiers, having won 4 of those, and drawing on two. They are looking to maintain their top spot against Republic of Ireland, who is only one point behind. New Zealand is ranking top in the Oceanic Zone ahead of New Caledonia, with a comfortable seven point lead. New Zealand has a near perfect record, with one loss and five wins, and hasn't drawn yet this season.

That one loss was the result of a game against Fiji in November. They could have had a perfect record but for this loss, where Fiji striker Roy Kirshna made it past replacement keeper Jacob Spoonley for a goal. This came after Glen Moss was sent off in the 59th minute of the game. Krishna came back again with another goal in the final minute of the game making the final score 2-0, a surprise for everyone. Since New Zealand had already grabbed the top spot there wasn't much to lose and both teams used the field to try out some new blood. New Zealand will play the Asian Team that is fifth ranked in the finals next year.

Italy invited the Republic of Ireland last game on April 1st, where Ireland maintained their record of no losses in Bari. Ireland had one man extra after Giampaolo Pazzini was sent off almost immediately after the game started, but even with a numerical disadvantage Vincenzo Iaquinta grabbed the first goal, in the 11th minute of the game. In the lead, Italy defended successfully against the blokes in green, until the 85th minute of the game, when Robbie Keane slammed in a goal, ending the game with a draw 1-1. If you want to watch this friendly on Wednesday, June 10th, get your membership by clicking on the links on this page. You'll have access to our huge network of live streams and feeds and be able to watch the qualification matches and the finals next year, with your twelve month membership.
