After drawing their weekend Serie A game against Juventus, Inter Milan host Sampdoria for the second leg of their Italian Cup semifinal at the San Siro on Thursday evening. Inter extinguished any slim hopes that Juve might have had of winning the Scudetto by drawing with the Turin giants on Saturday. Mario Balotelli’s second half strike put Inter ahead, but Zdenek Grygera salvaged a point for the hosts with an injury time header.
When Inter played the first leg of the semifinal in Sampdoria, they were still in Europe, and did not have as much of a lead in the league as they do now. Antonio Cassano gave Sampdoria an early lead, and Giampaolo Pazzini struck a brace to put them 3-0 ahead at the break. Despite having Daniele Gastaldello sent off, Sampdoria held on for a 3-0 win.
Sampdoria lost 2-0 to Catania on Sunday, but the Blucerchiati will gladly accept that result if they prevail at the San Siro on Thursday. Sampdoria had their chances in front of goal, but Cassano and co. failed to take advantage of them.
Winning the Coppa Italia is the only way Sampdoria can get into Europe this season. It is for this precise reason that goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi has dubbed this clash Sampdoria’s “Game of the Year”.
Recent games between the two sides have been tight, but Sampdoria will do well to remember that Inter beat them 3-0 not once, but twice in 2007. Do not miss the opportunity to watch this exciting Coppa Italia match live. Sign up today to watch footy 24*7.
