After a run of three straight wins in Spain’s La Liga, Atletico Madrid were brought back down to earth this past weekend when they suffered defeat at the hands of Getafe. Against Getafe last weekend, Atletico fell behind to a 39^th minute Manu goal and ended the half trailing 1-0. With every intention of starting the second half to try and rectify matters, their cause wasn’t helped by the sending off of Paulo Assuncao on 68 minutes. Despite the very best efforts of both sides after this incident, neither could find the net and the game ended in victory for the home side.

Thanks to the defeat, Atletico still have 23 points and are joined by two other teams on the same tally, although the Madrid side lead them both in the table on goal difference. Atletico, therefore, are eleventh in the La Liga standings, just a point behind Sporting Gijon.

For their part, Malaga go into the game in Madrid on Sunday on the back of a 2-0 defeat against the other Madrid team, Real. Although only having won three times all season, and one of those on the opening day, Malaga are still clear of the relegation zone and actually sit in sixteenth position with seventeen points.
