Barcelona’s glorious run of trophy winning continued just before the Christmas break when they managed to bring the World Club Championship trophy back to Spain after beating Estudiantes 2-1 after extra time in Abu Dhabi. This was Barcelona’s sixth trophy in the calendar year 2009 and few would bet against them continuing the trend into 2010.
The Catalan giants sit atop La Liga with 39 points to their name, two ahead of second placed and bitter rivals Real Madrid. In their last league game before they headed off to the Middle East Barca beat Espanyol 1-0 in the Barcelona derby.
Pep Gardiola’s side have now played fifteen La Liga games so far this season. In their seven home games they have recorded seven straight victories and haven’t lost a league game all season – home or away. With this kind of formidable record any team visiting the Nou Camp would fear the worst, and the same is very true for Villarreal.
A Villarreal team that travel to the Nou Camp game on the back of a 2-0 home win over Racing Santander last time out. That win moved them up to ninth in the league table and they have 21 points to their name. Their away record is not good and in their seven games they have one win, one draw and five defeats.

Barcelona are possibly one victory away from regaining the La Liga crown from arch rivals Real Madrid and they could do it at home to Villarreal this Sunday coming. Tune into oleolefootball.com for live streaming football coverage of the game and see if the Catalans are crowned champions this weekend.
Last weekend's game against Real Madrid was being touted as a potential championship decider, and those that coined the phrase were not wrong; just not in the sense that was expected. On current form, many thought that Real were odds-on for victory and that they would cut the deficit they had against Barca to just one point. History will tell us though how everybody was wrong, and the game in fact will be a record breaking one for all the wrong reasons as far a Real Madrid were concerned.
For the first time ever in the history of the El Clasico game Barcelona manage to score SIX goals at the home of the bitterest rivals. The final score of 6-2 epitomised what is fast becoming Barca’s best ever La Liga season. They lead the table by seven points with four games left, they are in the Spanish Cup Final and they are also still in the Champions League with a chance of getting to the final. For the record, the scorers against Madrid last weekend were Puyol, Henry (2), Messi (2) and Pique.
The home game against Villarreal is certain to be played in a carnival atmosphere, especially if Real Madrid drop points away to Valencia the evening before, which would then mean Barca could win the title this weekend.
For their part, Villarreal come into the game on the back of 2-0 home defeat against Sevilla and are now sixth in the table with 55 points.
