The Merseyside derby takes pride of place in the English Premier League this coming weekend when Everton and Liverpool clash at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are struggling for form this season and Sunday’s clash is eagerly anticipated by the supporters of both teams.
David Moyes’ Everton team are having a wretched season so far. They currently sit in fourteenth position with fifteen points and come into the game on the back of a 3-2 away defeat at Hull City in midweek. They also lost at Manchester United last weekend and another defeat against Liverpool will surely have fans questioning the management of David Moyes.
The Everton fans have every right to be worried ahead of the derby on Sunday as they have seen their team win only two home games so far this season. Crucially though, they have only lost one at home while drawing the remaining three. One thing that always rings true when it comes to a derby match, and that is derby matches anywhere in the world, is that form usually flies right out of the window and games are fought on adrenalin and passion only.
Liverpool come into the first derby game of the season almost in disarray, despite still managing to occupy seventh position in the league table. They have already lost five league games so far and are effectively out of the title hunt, while their “guaranteed” top four position is also in jeopardy. They have been eliminated from the Carling Cup, and this week they suffered the ignominy of an early Champions League exit with a Europa league stint beckoning.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is under increasing pressure to turn the season round, but if the Reds fail to finish in the top four at the end of the season then Benitez could find himself on the first plane back to Spain. Watch the Everton vs. Liverpool game here at oleolefootball.com.

Liverpool along with Chelsea are among the two sides to still remain unbeaten after five matches in the league. The Reds have been efficient more than entertaining but their tally of eleven points from five matches represents an impressive output for a side that has generally struggled to start strongly in recent years. Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane are on the fringe of putting together a lethal strike partnership while Steven Gerrard will call all the shots from the midfield. Liverpool have had mixed results at Goodison park in recent years and will be hoping to continue their chase of Arsenal will a win over their famed rivals this weekend.
Everton are four points adrift of their illustrious rivals coming into this fixture on the back of a 2-2 draw against Hull City. In a closely contested match, Hull took a 2-0 lead before Everton fought back strongly to hold Hull for a 2-2 draw. Everton have developed the makings of a strong side and with a bit of luck, they could be a potential dark horse for the Champions League places. The likes of Saha and Yakubu form a lethal partnership and they will be expected to give the Reds a concern or two this weekend.
