Last weekend Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side travelled down to London to face Gianfranco Zola’s inconsistent West Ham United side. Although the Hammers held on until injury time at the end of the first half, Paul Scholes’ strike seemed to deflate the home players who, in the second half, conceded another three goals, condemning them to a humiliating 4-0 defeat in front of their own fans.
United’s second half strikes came from a Gibson thunderbolt, a Valencia strike and a Rooney goal – Valencia and Rooney’s goal coming within the space of one minute. Thanks to Chelsea’s slip-up at, of all places, United’s bitter rivals Manchester City, United have now closed the gap at the top of the English Premier League table to just two points. Chelsea have 36 points and United now have 34. United are also six points clear of their placed side Arsenal.
Aston Villa travel to Old Trafford on Saturday on the back of a 3-0 home demolition of hapless Hull City. The win confirmed Martin O’Neill’s side as genuine contenders for breaking into the top four and they currently sit in fifth position, just one point behind Spurs who have 27 points. The match on Saturday will go a long way to proving Villa’s credentials for this season.
