North East rivals Newcastle and Middlesbrough meet at St James Park on Monday night in one of the most important derbies in recent years. Newcastle are third from bottom and in deep trouble. In their last game the Magpies lost 3-0 at Liverpool. Middlesbrough are also fighting for their Premier League lives and are level on points with their neighbours in the Premier League, but are below the Geordies on goal difference. The side from Teeside lost their last game 2-0 at home to champions Manchester United, goals from Ryan Giggs and Park Ji Sung enough to secure the victory. They know that three points are crucial at this stage of the season, unless they want to be playing Championship football next season.

Middlesbrough will still be without defender Emanuel Pogatetz and there are also doubts over Chris Riggott’s. Brazilian striker Afonso Alves may be restored to the starting line-up, after Marlon King and Jeremie Aliadiere struggled to make an impact in recent games.
