Celtic performed superbly in the first half of their last SPL game against Aberdeen and were 3-0 up by half-time, through a double from Aiden McGeady and a Scott McDonald strike. The Dons hit back in the second-half through former Birmingham striker Sone Aluko, but it proved nothing more than a consolation goal. It was a good start for new boss Tony Mowbray, who is under immense pressure to succeed at his old club.
Celtic strengthened their squad with the signings of Nancy pair Marc-Antoine Fortune and Landry N’Guemo and Coventry full-back Daniel Fox. Fortune spent last season under Mowbray at West Brom and proved a resounding success. He impressed the Celtic boss so much that the striker was Mowbray’s first summer signing at Celtic.
St Johnstone started their SPL campaign with a 2-2 draw away at Motherwell, Shaun Hutchinson and Ross Forbes scoring the goals for the Saints and Graham Gartland and Murray Davidson scoring for Well. It was a solid start for last season’s First Division champions. Manager Derek McInnes has made a good start to his managerial career with the Saints since joining the club in 2007.
They have some talented players in their squad including former Chelsea and Leeds midfielder Jody Morris and Trinidad star Collin Samuel in attack and in goal they have one of the most experienced players in the SPL in the shape of 41 year-old Alan Main.
