Celtic manager Tony Mowbray is worried about what type of side he can put together for this Scottish Cup encounter. There are at least six players out of the running due to injury or suspension. Celtic played Falkirk last weekend and that match ended in a 0-2 win for Celtic. The hoops now know that their chances of winning this year’s league are very slim so winning the Scottish Cup is going to be important.

As this article has been written before the weekend fixtures have taken place, we are not in a position to know the league position and points of both teams prior to Tuesday’s encounter, but what we do know is that there was a midweek fixture list prior to that and Celtic had a great chance to push their claims to challenge Rangers for the title in their home game against in-form Hibs. Celtic had made great use of the fact that Rangers could only manage a draw in the previous game by winning their own. This meant that had they beaten Hibs and then Saturday’s encounter with Hamilton, Tuesday’s game against Kilmarnock could have been the opportunity to bring the points difference from Rangers back down to just four points (the game against Kilmarnock is Celtic’s game in hand over Rangers).

As it happened though, The Bhoys suffered the ultimate disaster by losing 2-1 at home to Hibs, while on the same evening Rangers were winning. This means that prior to the weekend fixtures, Celtic are once again ten points behind their bitter rivals, albeit with that game in hand.

Kilmarnock, for their part, drew their midweek fixture 0-0 away to Hamilton. Before the weekend's games, they were eleventh (second bottom) in the league table with fifteen points to their name.

Celtic have managed in the last couple of weeks, weekend results notwithstanding that is, to lose the leadership of the SPL to Rangers and actually fall four points behind their Glasgow rivals at the same time. Prior to the weekend, the Bhoys travelled to Hearts in Edinburgh and were beaten by two goals to one. This defeat proved to be very costly for the green half of Glasgow as Rangers also won on the day, thrashing Motherwell 6-1.

Depending on the home result against Hamilton on Saturday afternoon, the game at Kilmarnock could prove to be vitally important in Celtic’s efforts at regaining the SPL this season from bitter rivals Rangers. In the nine games the Hoops have played away from Parkhead, they have won five, drawn one and lost three of their games.

Kilmarnock, for their part, have a game away to Dundee United at the weekend before they take on Celtic. The team are sitting in second last position in the SPL table with thirteen points, just one point ahead of bottom placed side Falkirk who have twelve points. Prior to the weekend fixture, Kilmarnock’s last game was a 2-1 home defeat to Falkirk.

Japanese playmaker Shunsuke Nakamura scored a hat trick as Celtic destroyed the Buddies 7-0 at Parkhead. Scott Brown netted a brace, while Marc Crosas also chipped in with a goal. St.Mirren’s John Potter also scored an own goal.

Amazingly though, Celtic’s misfiring trio of Georgios Samaras, Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink failed to find the back of the net in that record equalling weekend demolition. Boss Gordon Strachan will be hoping that they can come good against Killie.

Kilmarnock drew 0-0 against Aberdeen on Saturday, one of the two SPL weekend fixtures that failed to produce a goal. Jamie Hamill and Craig Bryson both had second half opportunities to break the deadlock, but unfortunately for Killie, neither of the two could convert their chances.

Killie’s last league win dates back to December, when they beat Hibs 4-2 at Easter Road. Their last league win at Rugby Park came in November, when they beat Dundee United 2-0. Jim Jefferies’ team are currently 9th in the 12 team SPL, a whopping 31 points behind the Celts. Killie have scored only 10 times at home this season- only St Mirren have scored fewer goals at home.

Although the Bhoys have dropped points in recent games, they are expected to win this one. In their last five trips to Rugby Park, Celtic have scored a total of fifteen goals. Killie’s last win over Celtic was way back in May 2001. Watch Kilmarnock v Celtic live to find out the result of this Scottish Premier League game.
