Rangers have not had the best of times this last month. After starting off the SPL season with a perfect three wins from three games and finding themselves leading the way, they have since endured three successive goalless draws, two away from home at Motherwell and Kilmarnock, and one at home (last weekend) with Aberdeen. Throw into the mix a heavy defeat on Tuesday evening in the Champions League at home to Sevilla by 4-1, and you find a team that is very short on confidence – not the ideal preparation for going into your first Old Firm derby of the season.

Celtic, on the other hand, have enjoyed a great start to the domestic season, managing to put their own European woes to one side while playing in the SPL. They remain unbeaten in their six games so far, with five wins and one 1-1 draw (against Dundee United) to their name. They currently lead the SPL table with sixteen points, four clear of Rangers and Hibs who are both on twelve. Last weekend Celtic travelled to St. Mirren and duly dispatched the home side by 2-0.

The derby has added significance for Walter Smiths’ Rangers side because if the unthinkable happens and they lose to their bitter rivals, they will find themselves seven points behind the Hoops, and at this early stage of the season will not bode well for all concerned.

Rangers beat Heart of Midlothian 2-0 last Sunday. Andrius Velicka continued his great recent run by scoring the first goal on the stroke of half time, and Kris Boyd made sure of three points when he scored his 30th of the season with a minute left on the clock.

Defender Majid Bougherra, Rangers’ Player of the year, returns from suspension to take his place in defence. Rangers last beat Celtic in August 2008, when a brace from Kenny Miller allowed them to beat their bitter rivals 4-2. Since then, they lost in the league in December, drew in February, and lost the League Cup final this March.

Celtic beat Aberdeen to keep their lead at the top of the SPL intact. Chris Maguire gave Aberdeen the lead in the first half at Pittodrie, but Gary Caldwell equalised for the Bhoys just before half time. Scott McDonald then scored twice in the last twenty minutes as the Hoops ran out 3-1 winners.

PFA Scotland player of the year Scott Brown will have to watch from the sidelines as he completes his two match ban. The 23 year old midfielder will definitely be missed, but Celtic do have the players to counter Rangers in the middle of the park.

Rangers, the defending champions, are the only team in Scotland with a chance of doing a domestic treble this season. They beat Falkirk 3-0 in the semifinals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup, with Nacho Novo grabbing a brace. Both Novo and Lee McCulloch are fighting to be fit in time for this big game.

Rangers beat Hamilton Academical 5-1 in the semis of the Scottish Cup last week. Kyle Lafferty scored twice, with Rocco Quinn, Steven Whittaker and Aaron Niguez also getting on the score sheet. It was an important result for the Gers as it came after their SPL loss to Inverness that saw them fall three points behind Celtic in the title race.

While Rangers were able to beat Hamilton, Celtic fell to a shock defeat against St.Mirren in the last four of the Scottish Cup. This was just days after they had beaten the same team 7-0 in a league game. Celtic skipper Stephen McManus conceded the penalty, and the defender has said that his side will go all out on Sunday to win the League Cup for their fans.

Celtic beat Dundee United 11-10 in a marathon penalty shootout to reach the finals of this event. In the third round and the quarterfinal, they had beaten Livingston and Kilmarnock respectively.
