Prior to Saturday’s match at Ibrox, Rangers have a midweek confrontation away to St. Mirren to contend with. As second placed Celtic are also playing on the same evening – at home to Hibs – the league table could look a bit different come Saturday afternoon. At the time of writing this article, the midweek results from the SPL are unknown.

Last weekend Rangers entertained Hearts at Ibrox and were a whisker away from losing their proud undefeated home record so far this season. With Hearts opening the scoring on 75 minutes while playing a man light due to the sending off of one of their players, Rangers knew their unbeaten run was on the line. And with the clock entering injury time with fans streaming out of the stadium, Rangers managed to snatch a late, late equaliser to not only save their unbeaten home record, but to also gain a point from an otherwise lost three points in the race for the title. This was even more important as rivals Celtic cruised to victory at the weekend.

Falkirk travels to Ibrox after also facing a midweek fixture. They play Motherwell on Wednesday evening at home. Prior to the Motherwell game, Falkirk find themselves at the foot of the SPL table with fourteen points. Away from home they have one win, four draws and five defeats.

While the Rangers seem confident that they will be able to defend their SPL title they will have to fight an uphill battle. Walter Smith was given tight restraint on finances and thus was unable to make any major moves this summer. The team did manage a bit of addition via subtraction by letting go of Barry Ferguson after some classless one the field actions last year. However they may have a hard time dealing with season opening injuries to Maurice Edu and Alan McGregor.

On the other side of the pitch Falkirk has a lot to prove this year after a poor showing in the SPL last season. Even though they lost to Vaduz in the Europa League manager Eddie May feels that his team is progressing well. They brought in goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar and got Danijel Marceta via loan for the year. Both players have the ability to have an immediate impact and Falkirk fans are excited to see them in action.

Rangers won their first SPL title in four years last Sunday when they beat Dundee United 3-0 at Tannadice. Kyle Lafferty, Pedro Mendes and Kris Boyd were the scorers for the Gers as they won their 52nd league title. Rangers are the defending Scottish Cup champions- they had beaten Queen of the South in last year’s final.

Rangers beat St.Mirren 3-0 in the last four to reach this final. Andrius Velicka’s 2nd minute strike put them 1-0 ahead, and goals from Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller in the space of five second half minutes put the result beyond doubt. Walter Smith’s men have let in just one goal during this season’s competition- in the 5-1 quarterfinal win over Hamilton Academical.

Falkirk fans celebrated last week as their side beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1-0 and thus managed to avoid relegation. Michael Higdon scored the goal that kept the Bairns up, and sent Inverness to the Scottish First Division next season.

Falkirk beat Dunfermline Athletic in the semifinals of the Cup. Tam Scobbie’s 54th minute strike and Scott Arfield’s late penalty were enough to send the Bairns through to the final. This is Falkirk’s first appearance in the final since 1997, when they were beaten by Kilmarnock.

Falkirk are already assured of a spot in Europe even if they lose to Rangers. Walter Smith’s men have been vulnerable against weaker teams this season in the SPL-they lost to both Inverness and St.Mirren in the league. Rangers are currently placed at the second spot in the Scottish premiership table and are just 5 points behind the leaders Celtic. The Rangers have been in great form this season and have been absolutely meticulous in their playing. The professional approach of the managers coupled with some extremely hardworking players has been a tremendous combination for this team. The players have all fired this season so far and owing to the fact that there are no current injury worries, the Rangers fans can expect a great and full strength team. The team is expected to come out firing on all cylinders for they will be looking forward to closing the 5 point gap on the league leaders. A victory here will bring them further close and the league championship will then be completely open.

Falkirk, on the other hand has had a fairly average season so far. The team is currently at the 11th spot in the league and will be looking forward to the game in order to gain 3 valuable points. The team has not been in the best of form off late. Of the last 6 games that the team participated in, it has managed to win just 1. 4 of the remaining 5 ended against them while 1 was a neutral draw. The team will be hoping to change their fortunes on their pitch and is expected to play hard.
