Walter Smith’s Rangers side entertained St. Johnstone last weekend and as expected put the away side to the sword. The Blues ran out easy 3-0 winners and were set on their way by a first minute strike by the league’s top scorer Kris Boyd. He followed up with a second from the penalty spot on 27 minutes, and the win was wrapped up when Nacho Novo scored in the 51^st minute.

The three points meant that Rangers stayed on the shirttails of arch rivals Celtic who also won at the weekend – against Rangers opponents this coming weekend Motherwell, by 3-2. Rangers are currently second in the table with 31 points from fourteen games, while Celtic lead the way with 33 points from fifteen games. As mentioned above though, Rangers play that game in hand on Tuesday (result as yet unknown) so they could very well be top of the league before the weekend’s fixtures.

Motherwell, as we stated above, come into the game against rangers on the back of a 3-2 home defeat to Celtic. They are currently fifth in the SPL table and have twenty points to their name.

Rangers currently lead the SPL league table with thirteen points from five matches and are looking in top gear going into the 2008/09 season. Rangers have had to endure a nightmarish past four months when they missed out on the UEFA Cup final, lost out on the final reaches of the league campaign to Celtic and missed out on Champions League action this season after being beaten in the qualifiers. Rangers however, have put all that behind them as exhibited by their 4-2 win over Celtic followed by their 2-1 win over Kilmarnock last weekend. The victory over Kilmarnock was a just indication of their fighting qualities as they fought back form going a goal down to pull up a fine victory. Rangers will have revenge to seek for against Motherwell, as it was the Steelmen who ruined their chance of silverware last season in the penultimate game of the season.

Motherwell on the other hand, are faltering in the league and their last match saw them being crushed 4-2 by Celtic. The score line was flattering in all reality after Celtic went on a first half blitz picking up a 4-0 lead. Motherwell also have European commitments to look after in the midweek facing an away trip to France against Nancy and it would take a brave man to bet on them securing a victory against Rangers this weekend.
