Werder Bremen progressed through to the semi finals of this competition thanks to an exciting 6-4 aggregate win over the Italians of Udinese. They drew the second leg in Italy 3-3 after winning the first leg at home 3-1. In the round before that they eliminated French side St. Etienne by a 3-2 aggregate score.

Hamburg managed to get past the so-called “richest club in the world” when they beat England’s Manchester City 4-3 on aggregate. They actually lost the second leg of the tie in England by 2-1, but the 3-1 first leg result proved to be just enough for the Germans to scrape through. Hamburg defeated the Turks of Galatasary in the round before, knocking them out with a 4-3 aggregate score.

At the weekend, both teams had contrasting fortunes in the German league. Werder Bremen beat Bochum at home by 3-2 and this despite trailing by 2-0 at half time. Werder are currently tenth in the Bundesliga table. Hamburg travelled to Borussia Dortmund for their league game and were beaten by 2-0. As a consequence, they dropped to fifth in the league table with 54 points, although just three points separate them from Wolfsburg who lead the table at the moment.
