With just one spot to go in the Asian Group contenders Saudi Arabia, North Korea and Iran will battle fiercely for that last spot. All three have had prior experience in the finals, but only one will be qualified on June 17th, when the final round of the 20 month battle to South African in 2010. One of these teams will definitely be going, but one other will be third place in the group, and have a play off series during the months of October and November.
South Korea qualified recently when they beat United Arab Emirates with a final of 2-0, and its they will be responsible for North Korea making it or not. South Korea, who were semi-finalists in the 2002 World Cup, will host the Saudis on Wednesday, and then will play Iran a week later. If they win at those two home games, that will leave North Korea simply needing a draw in their final game in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to qualify for South Africa, the second time that they will have qualified.
President of the Korean Football Association, Cho Chung-yeon, said that he had been contacted by North Korea, and that they had requested that they help them qualify by winning against Saudi Arabia. South Korea's coach, Huh Jung-moo said to reporters that he wanted both Koreas to go to South Africa. He said that he will do his best to win against Saudi Arabia and Iran regardless. However, right now Saudi Arabia looks to be in the best spot to take second, and if they do they will make a fifth consecutive appearance at the Finals.
Saudia Arabia is third in the group standings, with Korea just one point ahead, and the results of North Korea and Japan ending in a goal less draw, then South Korea beating United Arab Emirates 2-0 worked out really well for them.
