This Wednesday Sweden and Malta will meet up in Sweden's home turf at Gothenburg for a world qualifier match at Rasunda Stadum. Sweden has played three matches at Rasunda, with one win and two draws, which ranks them 4th on the group one rankings for the European Zone, with a total of 1 win, 3 draws and 1 loss for their 5 game total. Malta has lost every game played at home, with the exception of one draw against Albania in February, for a total of four, and has no wins at away games at all. This puts them at the bottom of the ranking for group 1 with only one point.
The last game that Malta played was against Hungary, and it was on April 1st, 2009. This game ended with a 3-0 win for Hungary, which made Hungarian fans go wild, as the team hasn't made an appearance at the World Cup Finals in nearly 25 years. The game was held in Budapest and the bottom ranked Malta didn't put up much of a fight for those three goals. Based on their record this season, Sweden should have no problem trouncing them in the game on Wednesday, but the game could also end in a draw, which has been Sweden's tradition of sorts over the past few games they have played at home.
For Sweden, having just finished playing Denmark on Saturday, the points could come easily and they could certainly use them, being ranked fourth in group one. They need to reach a point total of 14 to outrank Hungary in the number two slot, which if Hungary holds onto, will take them to the finals. However, Sweden lost to Denmark 0-1, which puts Denmark at the top of the group one rankings with sixteen points, promising them an almost sure ticket to South Africa in 2010. Sweden missed a penalty in minute 12, courtesy of Kim Kallstrom, and the team seemed to deflate after that. Shortly thereafter, Denmark's Thomas Kahlenberg made the goal that won the game, holding onto Denmark's record of no losses for group one tournaments.
Sweden certainly could have used the draw that scoring that penalty shot would have given them, then coming back and beating Malta by enough points to gain some rank. With a tournament just days earlier, it's anyone's guess as to how the Swedes will perform, or if Malta will finally step it up and win a tournament this season.
