In a week following the tragic death of Motherwell skipper Phil O’ Donnel, Gretna take on fellow struggler St.Mirren in what is expected to be a tough relegation dogfight at the Ray Dale Stadium.

Gretna are currently rooted at the bottom of the table with only ten points from nineteen matches and looked doomed to relegation. The Ray Dale outfits have only won two matches all season and need results desperately if they are to escape the drop this year. Gretna did their cause no good with a disappointing 3-0 loss at leaders Celtic in their last match of 2007.Goals by Scott McDonald, Scott Brown and Aiden McGeady helped take the champions back to the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and condemned Gretna to yet another disappointing loss.

St.Mirren despite being nine points off their rivals this weekend, are still in the relegation fight having secured only nineteen points off their nineteen matches are currently next to bottom Gretna in the Scottish League standings.St.Mirren were unlucky to lose their last match against Aberdeen where a 86th minute Steve Lowell striker denied St.Mirren a well deserved home point that would have taken them level with Hearts. St.Mirren have already boosted their squad for the second half of the season with the singing of promising English midfielder Andy Dorman on an 18-month contract from New England Revolution.

St.Mirren would be hoping that summer signing Craig Drago, who could only make his first appearance on 22nd December, would create trouble for a Gretna defence which has been leaking goals all throughout the season. The already fragile Gretna defence will b even more weakened by the imminent departure of experienced defender Danny Grainger to rivals Dundee United during the winter transfer season.
