Spain finally broke their jinx in shootouts of major international tournaments when they emerged victorious against the Azzuri last time around. Despite being the better team throughout, Spain struggled to create clear cut openings against the Italians leading to extra time and subsequently penalties. However, the might of Casillas and some calm finishing by the Spanish national soccer team saw the likes of Villa and Torres through to their first ever semifinal appearance of a major tournament. Spain along with Netherlands and Russia have been one of the more fluid teams throughout the tournament and their attack first policy has paid them rich dividends. While question marks still persist over the defence, the likes of Corzola, Senna and Villa have been in top form throughout with Cesc Fabregas providing the ammunition for the midfield. With Italy, France and Netherlands already out of the European championships, Spain will understand that this is probably their best chance of redeeming years of failure and expect a strong committed performance by the Spanish this time around.

Russia like Spain have been brilliant in attack and have improved by leaps and bounds as the tournament has progressed. The likes of Arshavin, Paluychenko and Zhirkov have caught the eye with their non-stop running and aggression. Russia will be immensely confident going into this clash after disposing favourites Netherlands in their last fixture. With the score tied at 1-1, Russia pulled off a marvelous attacking display in extra time and deserved their 3-1 win at the end. The star performer of the clash would have to be midfielder Arshavin who pulled all the strings from the middle. Arshavin was responsible for most of Russia’s attack and with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona beckoning, expect Arshavin to pull up a similar performance this time around. Russia have improved immensely since their 4-1 defeat to their semi-final rivals at the start of the Euro 2008 championships and coach Guss Hiddink will be hoping to go one better after reaching the semi-finals with both South Korea and the Netherlands earlier when he comes up against the Spanish armada this coming Thursday in Basle.
